Happy New Year and welcome to my blog! I know what you’re thinking…yet another blogger. You’re right but, let me introduce myself and tell you why I’m here. My name is Lisa and I am a wife to an awesome guy that I like to refer to as “Big Poppa” and mother of five (yes, I said five ) children ages 22 to 4. After living what has been a pretty mundane life (well, as mundane as life can be with children that range from college to pre-school), Big Poppa decided to test fate, live a little, if you will. He applied for, interviewed and accepted a job 1,000 miles a way from the only place that we had lived in recent history. So, in a matter of months we sold our house in Illinois, bought a house in Texas, packed our bags and moved. Believe me, it was a bit more complicated than that but, that’s the gist of it.
I was happy for my husband. He deserved the new job opportunity and I knew that it was a great move for him. However, the rest of us were not so fortunate. We had to figure out logistics for our college age children and reestablish a life for our little ones. To say that it was a major disruption would be a major understatement. I said “we” had to do all of this but, really I think what I should have said was that “I” had to do this. After all of the chaos of the move and settling in, I felt very isolated and lost. That’s when I started thinking about what my next act would be. What I could do that would be all about me? Where I could express my own ideas, opinions and interests.
Voila! Here I am! Okay, I gave you the abridged version but, trust me, the detailed version isn’t very interesting and it’s full of lots of whining and complaining and no one really wants to hear all of that. Anyway, I thought that a blog would be fun! A blog about what? A blog about us (you and I). About our lives, our families, our passions, our faith and our fears. The best part is that we don’t have to be exactly alike to enjoy the camaraderie. For example, I’m African-American, in my mid-forties, originally from a small town in the Midwest and was a single mother of one son for twelve years before I met my husband. I love to cook, decorate and generally enjoy all things artsy. I’m an avid people watcher and love children (obviously). Now, some of this may resonate with you or none of it but, that doesn’t mean that we can’t share and learn from each other and have respectful, constructive dialogue. Not to worry, mostly I talk about my kids and recipes that I’m trying out so, for the most part, I won’t be too heavy. I’m excited about the possibilities and I hope that you are, too.
I’d like to leave you with this: My 6-year-old and my 4-year-old (whom I lovingly refer to as Thing 1 and Thing 2) were playing with a new Play Dough Ice Cream Maker that Big Poppa had bought for them today. By the way, remind me to tell you about my dislike of play dough at a later date. Anyway, Thing 2 says to Thing 1 ” I can’t believe that Daddy bought us a new toy right after Christmas!?” Thing 1, being older and wiser, says “He bought it so that we would stay busy and he could watch the football game.” Silence. Thing 2 ponders then looks up and says “Ooohhh! That makes more sense.” Gotta love those two!
